REPRESENTATION OF URBAN SPACES IN CARL SANDBERG'S POETRY

Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the representation of urban spaces in the poetry of Carl Sandberg (1878–1967), one of the brightest and most influential American poets of the 20th century. The researcher concludes that Sandberg depicts the city as a living organism with its history, character, and emotions, as well as a space of opportunities and challenges for a person. The author uses various theoretical studies, methods, and approaches to analyze Sandberg's poetry: historical, structural-semantic, content analysis, and comparative analysis. The researcher reveals the main themes, motifs, and images related to the city in Sandberg's poetry, as well as his artistic tools (metaphors, synesthesia, rhythm, sound recording, etc.), which help to create a lively and multi-voiced image of the city. Also, the relationship between Carl Sandberg's work and other poets who wrote about the city and his role in the formation of American culture is considered.
