Onyms in U. Eco's column «La Bustina di Minerva» and the means of their translation

Abstract

The article outlines the problems of translating Italian onyms into Ukrainian on the basis of U. Eco's articles in the column «La Bustina di Minerva».

Due to the author's encyclopaedic knowledge, his texts contain numerous onomastic units, particularly toponyms and anthroponyms, among which urbanonyms and country names dominate. Rendering these units into Ukrainian is a separate challenge for a translator and requires the use of various methods selected for each specific case (transcription, transliteration and calquing with regard to Ukrainian orthoepy).

To analyse the translation of onomastic vocabulary, three key aspects are taken into account: the position of the onyme in the language system, its origin and peculiarities of functioning.
