Abstract

This article examines the influence of Anglicisms on contemporary Spanish in the fields of digital technologies, science, and social media. It explores the intensive penetration of English vocabulary, driven by the rapid development of digital platforms, globalization, and the role of English as the language of science and technology. The study demonstrates that terms such as software, hardware, email, app, cloud, blockchain, and startup have become integral to modern technical discourse and are widely used in both professional and media texts.

The article analyzes the socio-psychological factors behind the use of Anglicisms: they function as markers of modernity, prestige, and international competence, particularly among young social media users and technology professionals. The convenience and conciseness of English terms, compared to their Spanish equivalents, facilitate rapid communication in digital environments and platforms with character limits, such as Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok.

Special attention is given to the mechanisms of Anglicism adaptation in Spanish, including transcription, calquing, morphological adjustment, and semantic localization (e.g., link - enlace, post - publicación, hashtag - etiqueta, machine learning - aprendizaje automático). Frequency analysis of Anglicisms and their Spanish equivalents shows that traditional Spanish terms remain more widespread, yet some Anglicisms related to social media (tweet, post) are almost fully integrated.

The role of media and digital platforms in spreading Anglicisms is examined, highlighting their function in popularizing new technological concepts and providing communicative prestige. The position of the Real Academia Española (RAE) is also discussed: while recognizing the necessity of borrowings in the technological domain, the RAE recommends using Spanish equivalents when they exist and adequately convey meaning, in order to preserve linguistic and cultural identity.
